The most compelling reason to see Puccini’s La rondine, which the Eastman Opera Theatre is currently staging at the Eastman Theatre, is the chance to hear the terrific soprano Jennifer Gliere….
This young vocalist sang with a powerful voice that soared effortlessly over the large, throbbing orchestra. And her tone was sumptuous, silvery, and splendid. Just as importantly, Gliere proved to be a sensitive artist who knows how to turn a phrase while giving urgent meaning to the text. Her performance reminded me that many great artists, including René Fleming, got their start as Eastman students singing on that stage. So I heartily recommend Gliere to you.
